How To Pray

How to pray?

There has always been a conflict between the people who pray loudly and those who pray silently, the contemplative method of prayer. Each one has looked at the other with suspicion, one accusing the other.

Those who pray silently say God is not deaf. And those who pray loudly say those ‘simply sitting’ are wasting their time.  I felt the Lord prompting me  to  address this issue, because ignorance does not glorify God.

It is not necessary to pray aloud for God to hear and answer our prayers, because, the thoughts that we think, resounds in Heaven louder than our voice sounds on earth. To make God known about your needs, you need not make any sound; you need to only tell it within yourself.  You just need to think about it and God will hear your prayer.

In the book of Genesis we find something very interesting, that teaches that our thoughts resounds in Heaven loader than we think. “The Lord saw that the wickedness of humankind was great in the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of their hearts was only evil continually,” (Genesis 6:5).

The inclination of the thoughts of their hearts was well known to God. When the Israelites were grumbling within them, God knew it. “the sound of grumbling does not go unheard,” (Wisdom 1:11).
Praying with our thoughts is fruitful and sitting in silence helps to know the voice of God, to know His Presence intimately.
But it is necessary to pray aloud on earth.
Praying aloud will quickly loosen the burdens within us,
Praying aloud will cleanse the atmosphere we live in.
Praying aloud will quickly quicken us.

It is said about Jesus “In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears....,”(Hebrews 5:7).
Praying aloud releases the creative power. When God created the world, He did not think, and the world was created. Bible tells us He spoke, and the world came into being. The world was created by the sound of God. Praying aloud releases the authority we have. Praying aloud releases the glory in our voice.

Just before Jesus was betrayed, he was in the Mount of Olives praying, “In his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground,” (Luke 22:44).

The intense prayer of Jesus made him sweat blood; there will be moments in life when you need to pray like that. No matter how we pray, we need to know the circumstances we are in, especially when you are praying loudly in your personal prayer. Try praying out loud, though not loud enough to agitate others. Being able to hear yourself pray, really helps. You will find that your mind doesn't wander that easily and that you can pray more fervently.

You Will Learn to Walk in Love

You Will Learn to Walk in Love

As you learn to walk in the spirit of prayer, you will learn to walk in love, because the Spirit of love, the Holy Spirit will teach you the same. He will keep reminding you:

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends,” (John 15:12-13).

We are supposed to make “LOVE our AIM”, in other words we are supposed to make “walking in love” our top post priority.

“PURSUE LOVE and strive for the spiritual gifts, and especially that you may prophesy,” (1 Corinthians 14:1).

Many times we miss the mark of walking in love, when trouble rises from others; we tend to walk in our old ways of resentment.

And at those times the Spirit of God reminds us to forgive and walk in love. Many years ago, one person of our group was going around slandering me; I literally got fed up, and went to meet our Procurator,  as I reached his room, and I was going to enter, I heard the Holy Spirit say, “walk in love”, I returned without meeting Father. I literally shook myself  to get rid of all the resentment that had wrapped me. And continued to walk in love without any resentment against that person.

“Paul had gathered a bundle of brushwood an was putting it on the fire, when a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand…He, however, shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm,” (Acts 28:3-5).

Like Paul we need to shrug of the vipers of bitterness that wraps us as we serve the Lord, the Spirit of God within us will help us do the same.

The Holy Spirit know the words of Jesus “And because of the increase of lawlessness, the love of many will grow cold,” (Matthew 24:12). He will help praying people, to continue to walk in love.

Fanning the Power of God

                           Fanning the Power of God

We need to learn to fan the power of God within us; the power of God within us is like a river. Learn to stir up the Holy Spirit within.

The power of God remains dormant in us and needs to be stirred up, if you have lost the connection with the Spirit of the Lord in the midst of your day to day activities; you need to stir up the presence of God again and again. And that will keep you protected and energised.

You should learn from your relationship with the Holy Spirit, how his presence and power can be stirred. You should learn what stirs him up.

In our relationship with people, we know how to stir up our relationships. A simple phone call, a small gift, an e mail, a visit is more than enough to stir up our relationships.

In the same way for those who walk in partnership with the Holy Spirit, simple spiritual exercises is enough to stir him up in our day to day routine.

Worshiping God is the shortest route to experience his Glory. Remembering the word of the Lord, and speaking it through our lips is another shortest route to stir up the tangible presence.

Frequently visiting the sacrament of confession is the key to keep our relationship intact. Searching your hearts for sins and confessing them is the key to keep going with the Living God.
Praying a little prayer here and there in our day to day life will stir up the Holy Spirit within us.

We should also learn to stir the presence of the Holy Spirit in our meetings, whether it is spiritual and secular. There are certain spiritual principles, when we follow them, the glory presence of the Lord is manifested, and the glory increases when we follow the anointing, by following the promptings of the Spirit.

When we speak things that the Holy Spirit likes, the presence will increase, when we speak things he does not like the tangible presence wanes down. When we do things he likes the glory of God will increase, when you do things he does not like the glory will wane. So be careful and sensitive.

The days of baptism, communion, marriages, and anniversary in the lives of the people of God are not the days of alcohol, worldly shows, for criticism, backbiting and gossiping, quarreling but days to manifest the glory presence of the Lord.

Mediating on the word of God

Mediating On the Word of God

We have heard of the word “meditate” many times. Different religious circle uses this word. For some the word meditate is pondering or thinking about something deeply. For some it is emptying their mind. In our Catholic tradition we call it “contemplation”, where we spend time pondering on the “word of God”, or pondering on an image in our mind.

In recent years I discovered that meditation includes “muttering” the word of God. That is to keep saying the word of God. In the biblical tradition it is so.

When God told Joshua “you shall meditate on the law day and night” he was expecting Joshua to mutter His word.

Since then I have started meditating on the word of God in this manner, after learning from the Scriptures and the Living tradition. I just want to share some of the benefits I have discovered in meditating the word of God in this manner.

1.       There is a change in the atmosphere we carry. We all carry different atmospheres in our life.Muttering the word of God changes the atmosphere around me.

2.       A divine light is lit within me. All kinds of heaviness leave me. There is lot of unnecessary      heaviness that we carry in our day to day life. They leave when I start muttering the word of God.

3.       There is a stirring up of the anointing within me. As a believer the anointing that I have received       from Christ abides in me. Sometimes the anointing becomes stagnant, and the anointing needs to be stirred up. And that's what muttering of the word does.

4.       There is a increase of faith. Doubts leave when I mutter the word of the Lord. As "faith comes from hearing and hearing the word of God" A strong faith is developed within me.

5.       The powers of darkness leave, when I keep on muttering the word of God. You can resist the devil by muttering the word of God.

6.       The main purpose of Christians mediating the word of the Lord is to listen to his voice. As we meditate on the Word by muttering, and getting into silence we can hear what God has to say.  Many times while muttering the word, the Spirit of God drops wisdom into my spirit.

7.       A holy boldness is released in me as I keep muttering the word of God. The inner man is strengthen within me, because the word of God is the food for our spirit man.

8.       A divine life is released in me as I keep muttering the word of God. The ever increasing divine life is becomes stronger in me.

As start meditating on the word of God, my muttering you will discover many of the benefits in your own life. Start of with a word of your choice. And keep saying it for ten to fifteen minutes. This practice can be done in your personal prayer time or while washing cloths/walking around doing your daily routine.

(Joshua 1:8-9, Psalms 1:2-3, Psalms 119:97-99, Proverbs 4:20-23, Sirach 6:37, John 1:1, John 1:5, Mathew 4:4, Ephesians 6:17b, Hebrews 4:12-13, James 1:21, Romans 10:17, 1John2:27, Colossians 2:10, 2Corinthians 1:21, 1Peter 5:9, Ephesians 3:16-19, Ephesians 1:17-19, Job 33:33, John 10:27, John 10:10, Psalms 119:130, Psalms 119:18).

THE EFFECTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Effects of the Holy Spirit

In the Old and the New Testament we see activity of the Holy Spirit, the visible and the invisible effects of the Holy Spirit among the people of God.

The Holy Spirit has made himself known in invisible and visible forms. The effect of the Holy Spirit is seen in many of characters of the Bible. The people could see the effect of the Holy Spirit among the prophets of God. Some of the invisible effects found in the Bible are:

“In a little while the heavens grew black with clouds and wind; there was a heavy rain. Ahab rode off and went to Jezreel. But the hand of the Lord was on Elijah; he girded up his loins and ran in front of Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel,” (1Kings 18:46).

Elijah outran the chariot because of the Holy Spirit was upon him, the Holy Spirit could not be seen but the effects were seen.

“Then Samson went down with his father and mother to Timnah. When he came to the vineyards of Timnah, suddenly a young lion roared at him. The spirit of the Lord rushed on him, and he tore the lion apart with his bare hands as one might tear apart a kid. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done,” (Judges 14:5-6).

Here again we see the invisible action of the Holy Spirit coming upon Samson, he was strengthened and made bold to kill the lion.

“Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders; and when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied. But they did not do so again,” (Numbers 11:25).

Again we see the invisible action of the Holy Spirit coming upon the judges, and they prophesised.

The invisible activity of the Holy Spirit and effects is seen in thousands of believers around the world.

“I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit,” (Ephesians 3:16).

The effects of the invisible workings of the Holy Spirit are seen in strengthening the inner being of the believers in Christ.

The leading and sanctification and empowerment of a believer are the invisible activity of the Spirit of the living God.

The Holy Spirit also has made himself know in visible forms both in the old and new testaments.

As a mighty wind, “And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting,” (Acts 2:2)

As a tongue of fire, “Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them,” (Acts 2:3).

As a dove,  “And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him,”(Matthew 3:16).

As a pillar of fire and a cloud, “The angel of God who was going before the Israelite army moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from in front of them and took its place behind them. It came between the army of Egypt and the army of Israel. And so the cloud was there with the darkness, and it lit up the night; one did not come near the other all night, (Exodus 14:19-20). These activities were seen and felt by the people both in the old and the New Testament.

What is prayer?

           What is prayer?

There are many explanations of what prayer is, they are all correct. Because prayer is manifold, it has different purposes at different times. For some it is, praying for their needs to God.

For some it is praying for others, for some just simply being with him thinking about him, worshiping and adoring him, for some it is waiting on Him to experience His tangible presence and to the listen to His voice. Here in this chapter I would like explain to you in simple terms what actually prayer is.

First and foremost prayer is talking to God.  It is basically expressing your heart and spending time talking with God, the Creator.  The most common type of praying is speaking to God; it is petitioning to God their needs or in other words supplicating their wants to the Heavenly Father. This is a type of praying that has been approved by heaven. This kind of praying has been prayed by the prophets, the kings and the priests in the Old Testament.

In the New Testament we also find Jesus praying in this manner. And we are also commanded by the Scriptures to pray the prayers of petition and supplication.

“Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known to God...,” (Philippians 4:6).

For some prayer is just being with him, worshiping and adoring Him. Calmly sitting at the feet of Jesus and gazing at his face by faith.

“As an apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among young me. With great delight I sat in his shadow, and his fruit was sweet to my taste. He brought me to the banqueting house, and his intention towards me was love,” (Song of Solomon 2:3, 4).

For some prayer is not a one way action, God speaks, they listen. They speak and God listens to our voice and talks back. Conversational prayer is like talking to a friend; you talk for some time, and keep silent to listen to what he or she has to say.

“Moses said to the Lord, “See, you have said to me, ‘Bring up this people; but you have not let me know....The Lord said to Moses, I will do the very thing that you have asked; Moses said, “Show me your glory, I pray.”... “And he said, “I will.....”(Exodus 33:12-23).

For some prayer is spiritual warfare praying. They keep wresting in prayer for the will of God to be established on earth and in the hearts of men.

“Ep-aphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ Jesus, greets you. He is always wrestling in his prayers on your behalf, so that you may stand mature and fully assured in everything that God wills,” (Colossians 4:12).

For some praying is just “resting in him” or just “soaking” in the tangible presence of God.

“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest, “(Mathew 11:28).

All types of praying are a necessity in our life; we need to learn to move as the Spirit prompts us in prayer.

“In the New Covenant, prayer is the living relationship of the children of God with their Father who is good beyond measure, with his Son Jesus Christ and with the Holy Spirit. The grace of the Kingdom is "the union of the entire holy and royal Trinity. . . with the whole human spirit,” (2565).*

The Bible tells us God is Spirit, and Bible also tells us that God created man in His image,  as God is triune, God has also made man tripartite, we have a spirit, a soul and a body. As somebody said man is a spirit being having a soul and living in a body.

“May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely, and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2Thessalonians 5:23).

So we see man is spirit, soul and body, and God desires that the spirit, soul and body be kept sound and blame less. We also need to understand that the spirit and soul are not one.

“Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints and marrow, it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12).

We find here that the spirit and soul can be separated. That it proves that the soul and the spirit are not one.  The soul is the realm of our mind, emotions and will. The spirit and the soul have to be separated in order to become a spiritual man. The all powerful word of God can do it.

The Bible speaks a few words about our spirit,

“...Thus says the Lord, who stretched out the heavens and founded the earth and formed the human spirit within.”(Zechariah 12:1). The human spirit within us, was formed and placed within us by God

And Bible tells us “God yearns jealously for the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”? (James 4:5).  God has a great desire for fellowship with the spirit he has made to dwell in us.

“The human spirit is the lamp of the Lord, searching every inner post part,” (Proverbs 20: 27). The human spirit within us is the lamp that the Lord has placed with us to communicate with us.

We need to always remember, that we are a spirit being. The potentiality of the human spirit within us is great. The human spirit can commune with God.

When God created man, he put the spirit into man. “He endowed them with strength like his own, and made them in his own image,” (Sirach 17:3).

When God created man he did not put the Holy Spirit into man, but the human spirit into man.

The word used in Hebrew for the word ‘breath’ is  neshâmâh (nesh-aw-maw')  which means a puff, vital breath, soul , spirit.

The Bible tells us that God...“….breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being….,”(Genesis2:7). The Hebrew word used here is neshamah not ruach.

The word ruach (roo'-akh) is not used here, the word ruach is used for the word “Spirit” of God.  The Bible tells us “the earth was formless and void and darkness covered the face of the deep. While the Spirit (ruach) of God swept over the face of the waters,” (Genesis 1:2).
That means that God had not deposited the Holy Spirit in man when he created man. God put the spirit, which God calls the “the human spirit” in man.
“...Thus says the Lord, who stretched out the heavens and founded the earth and formed the human spirit within.”(Zechariah 12:1).

Our Spirit can pray.   (1Corinthians 14:14)
Our Spirit can rejoice. (Luke 1: 46-47)
Our Spirit can serve.    (Romans 1:9)
Our Spirit witnesses in us. (Romans 8:16)

As I have said in the beginning of this chapter that prayer is simply communing with God, our spirit speaking to God. Prayer is our spirit talking to God who is Spirit. Prayer is utterances from deep of our human spirit to the deepest heart of God.

That is what Bible tells “deep calls to deep” and that is what the Bible says that you must worship God in the spirit and truth.

And we need to learn from the doyens of prayer, what prayer actually is.

“While I was speaking, and was praying and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting  my supplication before the Lord my God on behalf of the holy mountain of my God, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel....,”(Daniel 9:20-21). Here we see that praying is communing with God or in other words speaking to God.

We need to understand that prayer in its basics is imploring the Lord. The synonyms for the word imploring is pleading, begging, entreating, and petitioning.

“But Moses implored the Lord his God, and said.....,” (Genesis 32:11).

We need to go to the Father, and tell everything that is in our mind, our pains, our needs, things that trouble us, confuse us and hurt us.

“Trust in the Lord at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us,” (Psalms 62:8).

We must learn to pour out our heart to him, who loves us, we must see in faith as David saw “I saw the Lord always before me...,”(Acts 25) and pour out everything, placing everything before the Lord in prayer, is what the heavenly Father desires.

Our prayers can be priestly, where we humbly petition for our lives and others.
“O Lord, I pray, let the Lord go with us...” (Exodus 34:9).

Our prayers can be kingly, where we can command things to take place in ourselves   and others.

“On that day when the Lord gave the Amorities over to the Israelities, Joshua spoke to the Lord; and he said in the sight of Israel. “Sun, stand still...And the sun stood still..,.” “Joshua 10:12-14).

Prayer time includes praise and worship, ongoing repentance, thanking God, reading and meditating on the word, praying for yourself and praying for others.

Praying time includes, praying vocally, loudly, singing, dancing, praying in tongues, praying the word, praying the rosary, praying in silence, meditating and contemplating.

It is not necessary, to have all this type of praying at all the prayer times. If you are a person who is beginning to have a prayer schedule, you need to have a time table to discipline yourself; you need to get grounded in the basics of prayer.

It is always good to have a diary of your own, where you can write down the things that you have prayed for, so that when the answers come, you can thank God.

The battle for prayer

(From my forthcoming book on prayer).

The battle for prayer

It is so easy to talk about prayer, very easy to read about prayer, it is extremely easy to advice people to pray, but when it comes to praying personally, it is a difficult task.

For many, prayer will always be a struggle, for we have to overcome the fleshly desires within us in order to pray. And we have to overcome the tempter who, tries to keep us from praying.

“....Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour, (1Peter 5:8).

The fleshly desires that we have, are a real hindrance to prayer, we rather sleep than pray, we rather do something than pray, we rather talk to man than talk to God, we rather spend time watching television than pray, we rather spend time on the internet than pray, we rather spend time reading books than pray, we rather go out visiting, than praying, we rather go for preaching than praying.

The remedy is in dying daily. That is what Paul said, that “I die daily” we need to die daily to our fleshly desires. As we sit with God daily, we will be slowly loosened  from our fleshly desires. The “violent take it by force,” says the word of Lord, you need to be violent with yourself, literally forcing yourself to pray.

We need to choose what we need to add to into our life, things that are everlasting or perishing, things that build your spiritual life or things that diminishes it.

Then we have also the “tempter” who does not want us to pray. He is afraid of our prayer. He trembles when we pray. The tempter knows that if we continue to pray it will cause damage to his kingdom.

The tempter also knows that man has a tendency to drift away from a deeper fellowship of God. So he keeps us away from prayer. Literally he takes advantage of it.

For many the temptation comes in this way:  a unworthiness to pray, a feeling of lethargy, the things to be done, distracting thoughts,  anonymous phone calls, friends inviting to go out, and much more.

For people growing up in prayer, not  feeling the freedom to pray, no exuberant experience while praying and after prayer, feeling of dryness while praying or after praying, wild sexual thoughts hitting  the mind, problems increasing.

All these problems can be overcome, the secret is to continue praying, as you continue to pray, you will find changes taking place.

“Discipline yourselves; keep alert...” (1Peter 5:8), you need to discipline yourself, in order to pray, you need to plan, set goals, in order to discipline yourself, without discipline, you will fail.

You need to stick to the plan, to come out victorious, and once you get into the flow of prayer nothing can stop you. You will be unstoppable.

You need to fellowship with people who pray, and that will strengthen you, you are going to become like the people you walk with. So you need to scrutinise your close friends. It is worth walking with people who walk in the supernatural naturally.

When I started growing in the life of prayer, I used to avoid people who  talk about prayer, but never pray, another  kind of people I avoided was people who disliked praying, there was the third kind “holding to the outward form of godliness but denying its power,” I avoided them, because they had nothing to impart to me. Not that I closed the door to them, I just did not spent my free time with them.

When I started growing up in prayer, and getting stronger and stronger in the spirit of prayer, I went back to these people, I went back to this first kind, “who talked about prayer, but never prayed” and inspired them to pray.

I went back to the second kind “who disliked praying” and taught them the need to pray.

The third kind “holding to the outward form of godliness but denying its power”, I never went back to them, because they are un-teachable, they presume they know everything.

What  I am trying to highlight  is that you need to be careful of selecting who should be within the inner ring of friends and relatives.

They should be people, who leads you closer to the Lord.
They should be people, who leads  you to purity.
They should be people, who leads you to faith.
They should be people, who leads you to the truth.
They should be people, who leads you to His Presence.
They should be people, who leads you into the spirit of prayer.

You should avoid people who lead you to worldliness.
You should avoid people who lead you to alcohol.
You should avoid people who lead you to drugs.
You should avoid people who lead you to sexual sins.

Now don’t misunderstand, you need to talk to them, you need to talk good about them, you need to help them and pray for them, but when it comes for their lifestyle or their worldly words influencing you, you need to keep away.

After you grow strong in the Lord, you can spend time with them and influence them to come to the fullness of the Lord.

This is the price you need pay in order to walk daily, with the living God.

Jesus said  “For the gate is narrow and the road is hard that leads to life, and there are few who find it,“ (Matthew 7:14).

The road is narrow that leads to life, you are called to walk in it, you would not find many friends there, you will find few of them, and they shall be genuine. Many times you have walk alone, but the Holy Spirit will be in your walk, many times you will have to sit alone, but the Holy Spirit will  there sitting with you, and you will  have the Cloud of Witness around you. Many times you will have no one to talk to, but you will have the Holy Spirit to talk to. No matter how hard you find it, battle on and pray.

The battle for prayer will continue till the end of the age, whenThe Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all evildoers, and they will throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Let anyone with ears listen!” (Matthew 13: 41-43)
